Hundreds of guests have visited the aluminum smelter this summer
Alcoa Fjardaal has invited guests to visit the aluminum smelter on Saturdays to get to know the company's operations. A great number of guests have accepted the invitation, and last Saturday, for example, over a hundred people visited the smelter.
In addition to inviting individuals to visit on Saturdays, the company has received many people in organized groups at other times. Interested residents in the area, other Icelanders and foreign tourists alike, have availed themselves of the opportunity to become acquainted with one of the most modern aluminum smelters in the world. Examples worth mentioning include a hiking club of 40 people from Seltjarnarnes (SW-Iceland) that was hiking in East Iceland, senior citizens from the Westmann Islands (S-Iceland), 100 people from the mobile home club Flakkarar, the Association of Trade and Services in Akureyri, a group of foreign engineers that has worked at Karahnjukar Power Station, Britain's Ambassador to Iceland and his entourage, MPs from Greenland and ministers and a group from the Faroe Islands Electric Utilities. The visits are a part of the company's emphasis on sharing information on its operations with the general public. Among the topics that the company's employees have presented to interested guests is what becomes of the company's products, Alcoa's emphasis on sustainability, the environment and safety and the community impact of the project in East Iceland. Bus trips around the aluminum smelter have been offered, and smaller groups have been taken on tours of the aluminum smelter when this has been possible. The plan is to offer the general public visits on Saturdays through the end of September. In addition, employees are always ready to receive groups and other times.
