Alcoa and Landsnet renew MOU for aluminium smelter in Bakki
Alcoa and Landsnet have renewed a Memorandum of Understanding through the end of 2009 on the transport of electric energy for an aluminum smelter in Bakki, N-Iceland. Work is proceeding in accordance with the plan laid out in the companies' previous MOU.
Landsnet is now working on an initial evaluation report on the environmental impact of a high-voltage line from the planned geothermal power stations in Thingeyjarsysla to Bakki. The design of the high-voltage lines is proceeding in parallel with this. The lines will run through the municipalities of Skútustadahreppur, Adaldælahreppur, Thingeyjarsveit and Nordurthing, a distance of 60 km. The municipalities' general plans for the lines have been confirmed by the Minister for the Environment. Preparations have also begun to reinforce the electric energy transport system from Blanda, NW-Iceland, to Akureyri, which is the first phase of necessary reinforcement of the main transport system for electric energy in North Iceland. If construction of an aluminum smelter in Bakki materializes, this would promote renewal of the system since it is necessary to connect new power stations and the aluminum smelter in Bakki with the main transport system.
