150 Women for Refreshments
On 19 June, Alcoa Fjardaál invited women to pink refreshments. This was in celebration of women's suffrage in Iceland, which was achieved on June 19th, 1915. The celebration was a great success, with between 150 and 160 women of widely varying ages and from the entire region taking advantage of the invitation.
Everyone was received in the company canteen with an aperitif - naturally, one that was pink and suited to the occasion. There was also a programme consisting of short speeches and music. The scheduled speakers were two women who are grandmother and granddaughter, both named Stella: the grandmother Stella Björk Steinþórsdóttir and the granddaughter Stella Rún Steinþórsdóttir. Sharing their views on the fight for women's rights with the rest of those attending, they encouraged women to take the offence and demand the same pay as men! Ragnheidur Jara Rúnarsdóttir sang several delightfully selected songs, to the accompaniment of Daníel Arason at the keyboard. As the exceptionally delicious taste indicated, it was the staff of Lostaeti, which operates the Alcoa Fjardaál canteen, who were in charge of refreshments. Most of the women in attendance concluded their visit by taking a bus ride through the area, while two capable female employees of Fjardaál shared their knowledge of operations with them. In every way, the day was enjoyable, so that there are plans underway for celebrating June 19th annually.
