Húsavík union leaders visit Fjardaál
Representatives from the Húsavík Workers Union recently visited the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter to get acquainted with the operation of a smelter.
The visit was ignited by the people of Húsavík’s interest in the construction of a smelter in Bakki. Alcoa is conducting a feasability study, in co-operation with the local municipalities and the Icelandic government, for a possible Bakki smelter. More than twenty union representatives participated in the smelter tour, accompanied by Kristján Halldórsson, Alcoa’s community relations representative in North Iceland. Erna Indridadóttir, PR for Alcoa Fjardaál and her colleague, Hilmar Sigurbjörnsson, guided the guests and informed them about the factory’s aluminum production. The guests toured the facilities and discussed various issues with some of the employees. They were pleased with the visit and commented afterwards that they now know more about the operation of a smelter, Alcoa’s methodology and the company’s values
