In Iceland, aluminum can turn into gold
Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende (BT Business DK) recently published an article on the aluminum business in Iceland, titled “In Iceland, aluminum can turn into gold.”
It is very positive towards the development in East Iceland following the construction of the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter in Reydarfjordur. Tómas Már Sigurdsson, director of Alcoa Fjardaál, is interviewed by BT. “I’ve been involved in this project since the very beginning,” he says. “It’s been a long journey, but I’m proud of the outcome, and the demand for aluminum – especially in China and other parts of Asia – will continue to increase.” He states that the smelter has had considerable impact on the local communities and will, in the future, also be important for the Icelandic economy. BT adds that he moved with his wife and four children from the bustling capital, Reykjavik, to Egilsstadir, a town of roughly two thousand inhabitants, but the family has never regretted that move. The article also covers Alcoa’s interest in further developments in Iceland: a possible smelter in Bakki by Húsavík in North Iceland, using power from geothermal resources.
