Work related accident
A worker at the Alcoa Fjardaal smelter got an electric shock during his work in the pot-room about half a month ago.
He was immediately transferred to the nearest hospital. Examination revealed no injuries and allowed to go home the next morning. The following weekend however he started to experience symptoms and was on Sunday admitted to the Landsspitali University hospital in Reykjavik. His injuries are being investigated and it seems that they are more serious than orginally estimated. He was working in the smelter for Alcoa Fjardaal’s subcontractor, Vélaverkstæði Hjalta Einarssonar. He was doing measurements in one of the pots, which under normal cirumstances is considered a relatively safe work. The reason for the accident was a hidden flaw in the finish of electricity in the pot-room. The flaw has been repaired to ensure that such an accident does not repeat itself. The Administration of Occupational Safety and Health in Iceland has been informed of the accident. The companies consider the accident a very serious matter. Safety of workers is of utter importance at Alcoa Fjardaal and the goal is to run a safe workplace without any injuries of workers.
