Alcoa Publishes First European Sustainability Report

Alcoa (NYSE:AA) today announced it has released its 2004 European Sustainability Report, which provides detailed insight into the environmental, social, and economic achievements and challenges of Alcoa in the European region. The report is available online at www.alcoa.com/sustainability.

“This first European Sustainability Report complements Alcoa’s corporate report and covers our operations in 16 countries,” said Ric Belda, Alcoa’s executive vice president for the European region. “As we continue our journey toward sustainability, we will engage our stakeholders at every level to improve our performance and achieve our goals.  This report is an important step in that process.”
 
In 2004, Alcoa's significant European highlights included the following: 
  • Spanish locations San Ciprián and La Coruña signed a voluntary agreement with the Galician regional government to implement 18 environmental projects.
  • The European locations achieved a 67% reduction in lost workdays and 50% reduction in total recordable injuries from 2003 to 2004.
  • More than €2.29 million was granted to local European non-governmental organizations through Alcoa Foundation.
  • Construction began on a new smelter in Iceland and an extrusions plant in Romania. Alcoa also acquired two  large Russian fabricating facilities in early 2005.
