The electricity generated by the Kárahnjúkar hydropower plant will be carried 50 km to the Alcoa aluminium smelter in the port of Reyðarfjörður by two sets of high voltage cables known as Flótsdalslínur 3 & 4, which will have a rated power frequency withstand voltage of 420 kV but will be operated at 220 kV.
Running alongside each other for most of their route, they will pass through east Iceland's three principal municipalities; Fljótsdalshreppur, Austur-Hérað and Fjarðabyggð.
