People - Overview
From 2002-2008, as the Alcoa Fjardaál smelter was built and started operations, a total of 450 people were hired.
There are few, if any, unskilled jobs required in the operation of a technically advanced, modern aluminium smelter. Depending on the nature of the task the required skills generally develop through a combination of academic learning and work-based training.
Our operating positions, which are the majority of our workforce, are filled by people who have sound secondary school or technical college education. Extensive training will equip these people with the skills they need to successfully participate in the operation of the Fjarðaál smelter.
Our senior operational positions require qualifications in science-based disciplines such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering. Management and senior administrative positions are filled by people with tertiary science or commercial qualifications.
All of these positions are open to men and women alike; Alcoa bases its recruitment processes on merit.
In addition, Alcoa's manufacturing and business processes are designed to support ongoing learning and improvement. For more insight into Alcoa's work climate and our approach to lifelong learning we encourage you to click here: http://www.alcoa.com/global/en/careers/opportunity.asp
