Alcoa Foundation

Alcoa Foundation, established in 1952, organizes and finances all of Alcoa’s charitable activities. The Foundation celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment and its continuous humanitarian work. The Foundation is separate from the Alcoa Inc. profit oriented activities and it is a legally independent institution. Its charitable monetary donations are funded by the income of its own invested assets. The goal of the Foundation is to improve the quality of Alcoa communities and their environment.

Alcoa’s humanitarian and charitable activity, an integral part of Alcoa’s corporate culture, is established in Hungary too. It has provided support to the communities for exactly ten years, from 1993, from its presence in Hungary as an investor.

Alcoa companies in Hungary as “good corporate citizens”, are constructive and active partners of the country and all of the locations where Alcoa companies operate, and of the leaders of Fejér county and Székesfehérvár, helping its leaders, civil organizations in their efforts to find solutions for social problems. The community support is not always manifested in monetary donations, but in encouragement for the employees to initiate and participate in charity work.

Every year, based on applications, the Foundation makes its decisions about the donations that are offered to all the institutions of the countries that apply and are engaged in the non-profit work in the communities where Alcoa operates.

The Hungarian non-profit organizations have applied and received donations from The Alcoa Foundation through our companies since 1993, when Alcoa began operating in Hungary.

In the last 10 years, The Foundation has supported approximately 200 projects with the donation of $2,353,500 (approx. 550 million Forints), in the areas of Hungarian education, research, health, environmental protection, community development, and culture.

Hungary succeeded in receiving a significant part of the donations, approved for Europe: $10,000 in 1993, $19,000 in 1994, $25,000 in 1995, $70,000 in 1996, $215,000 in 1997, $310,000 in 1998, $350,000 in 1999, $370,000 in 2000, $508,000 in 2001, and $476,500 in 2002 in total.(Attached is the list of annual donations since 1993.)

The majority of donations were distributed in Fejér County and Székesfehérvár, where four Alcoa companies operate. Its support umbrella also stretches out beyond the county though, and it includes national institutions as well. The Foundation supported the Fejér County Hospital, the City Hospital in Mór, the orphanage in the county and in Székesfehérvár, the comprehensive education and social support organizations in Székesfehérvár and in Mór, as well as  local cultural initiatives with significant amounts. It also contributed remarkably to the development of higher education; the Technical Universities of Budapest, Veszprém and Miskolc, along with the University of Economics and Government Administration of Budapest received significant donations. In recent years, the Hungarian Leó Szilárd joint scholarship for professors, established by The Foundation for the Hungarian Higher Education and Research has also received donations. This scholarship recognizes the outstanding work of three professors annually. We granted the support by The Foundation for a three-year work period for one of the department chairman professors of the University of Economics and Government Administration.

Besides the above mentioned activities of the Alcoa companies, according to their practices, they participate regularly in the American Thanksgiving Celebration of the American Chamber of Commerce, (AmCham) organized by its Hungarian Chapter, and in many other charitable fundraisers, connected to other events.

They contributed to the national aid rally with significant donations benefiting the flood victims in last the years.  They regularly participate in it and successfully manage the activities in the "Light in the Dark", local government program of Székesfehérvár that distributes goodwill Christmas packages from company donations to impaired, lonely, and needy people. Alcoa-Köfém Kft. donated a Ford Galaxy van that seats 8 people to the developmentally challenged children of the Mátyás Éltes Foundation. To help the police force, they donated two cars to the Székesfehérvár Police. In a joint project with the local government of Székesfehérvár and the ÉDÁSZ,  the company has landscaped the environment beyond the plant’s premises and it has rebuilt the bus stops on that area.

Alcoa companies consider themselves integral parts of the Fejér county, Székesfehérvár, and Mór communities. The good relations and respect is mutual. The leadership of the county and the cities respectfully recognize and appreciate our constructive role. They set our humanitarian activity as an example to the other local companies, the way, we work on transforming our goals to become reality. Our companies are convinced that our successes incorporate the successes of the local communities, and vice-versa,  the problems, weaknesses of the communities would unfavorably influence our production. That is the reason why the Alcoa companies strive to establish the best possible cooperation with the county and city government, the local communities, and the non-profit institutions. The above complex corporate support for the civil sphere is a crucial tool in building good relations.
