Alcoa Approved to Open Three Oaks Mine in Texas; Keeps Rockdale Operations Competitive

Alcoa’s application to open its new Three Oaks Mine near Rockdale, Texas was unanimously approved by the Railroad Commission of Texas last Friday allowing lignite mining to begin some time next year.

The Three Oaks Mine will provide fuel to generate electricity for Alcoa’s aluminum smelter in Rockdale for another 30-35 years. Alcoa currently mines about six million tons of coal annually at its Sandow Mine to provide power for the smelter, but the mine is nearly depleted.

Alcoa’s mining operations in Texas have received many awards for land restoration, including “Best of the Best” among all surface mines in the U.S., from the Dept. of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining, and most recently the “Lone Star Land Steward Award” from Texas Parks and Wildlife.
