More Than 6,000 Alcoa Volunteers Around the World Are Working to Improve the Environment November 17-22, 2003
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2003--
Taking Action -- Alcoa's Worldwide Week of Community Service Will
Recognize and Engage Thousands of Volunteers at Events in more
than 150 Locations Worldwide
This week, more than 6,000 Alcoa employees in over 150 communities
around the world will volunteer their time as part of a first-ever
worldwide volunteer event focusing on conservation and
sustainability--Taking Action--Alcoa's Worldwide Week of Community
Service. Alcoans from more than 20 countries will invest in the
environment in their communities with volunteer projects such as:
- Cleaning and painting children's playgrounds in Monterrey,
Mexico;
- Clearing a trail and providing a natural habitat for a fork of
the Appalachian Trail from Tennessee to Virginia, USA;
- Presenting environmental education programs in schools and at
NGOs in Itapissuma, Brazil;
- Working with high school students in Romania to clean the Cris
River;
- Constructing a sail shade in Anglesea, Australia to protect
children at a daycare center from prolonged sun exposure; and
- Turning an illegal garbage dump into a beautiful community
garden in May Pen, Jamaica.
In addition to the 6,000 volunteers, another 15,000 Alcoans are
expected to recognize nonprofits and NGOs for their service to
communities. "Alcoa's vision is to be the best company in the world,"
said Alain Belda, chairman and chief executive officer of Alcoa.
"There is no better place to measure the accomplishment of that vision
than at the community level where we work to improve the quality of
life by investing our time, resources and grant money."
While Alcoans have been volunteering in their communities for many
years, Alcoa's programs that began in the past two years--ACTION
(Alcoans Coming Together In Our Neighborhoods) and Bravo!--formally
recognize and encourage teams and individual employees with grants to
the organizations they serve. In 2002, through these two programs,
more than 6,000 Alcoans volunteered in nearly 150 communities around
the world, earning more than $1.1 million in Alcoa grants in those
communities. Alcoa will also recognize 25 ACTION projects and 25
individual volunteers with additional grants to the organizations they
serve.
Taking Action is a capstone to Alcoa Foundation's 50th Anniversary
