Affected Production at Alumar Smelter Begins To Be Restored
PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 2003--Alcoa (NYSE:AA)
announced today its jointly-owned Alumar plant in Sao Luis, Brazil has
begun to resume production and is expected to be operating at full
capacity by the end of the year. An electrical outage in July had
affected approximately 40% of the production.
Throughout the repair work, Alcoa managed its costs carefully, and
the expected financial impact will be minimized to approximately
$14 million after tax, with costs split evenly between the 3rd and 4th
quarter of 2003. Alumar's alumina production, as well as its remaining
aluminum production lines, continues to operate normally.
The Alumar smelter is jointly owned by Alcoa and BHP Billiton and
has a nameplate capacity of 370,000 metric tons per year. Alcoa owns
53.66 percent of the facility with the remainder owned by BHP.
