AFL Telecommunication Recipient of R&D 100 Award for Innovative Product
SPARTANBURG, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 2003--AFL
Telecommunications, a part of Alcoa Inc. and Fujikura Ltd. of Japan,
was a member of an industry team lead by 3M Company that won an R&D
100 Award from R&D magazine, the premier research and development
magazine in the U.S. The annual awards recognize the most significant
new products introduced into the marketplace in the past year.
AFL's Alcoa Conductor Accessories group was recognized for the
development of compression accessories specifically for 3M's composite
conductor power-line cables, know as Aluminum Composite Conductor
Reinforced (ACCR) cable. These Alcoa-developed accessories are
specially engineered to provide improved heat dissipation and operate
25%-30% cooler than the conductor, thereby extending the conductor's
life.
Alcoa Conductor Accessories now develops a full line of
compression accessories for 3M's ACCR conductors and has applied for a
U.S. patent for this new product line.
AFL Telecommunications will receive the R&D 100 award during
ceremonies to be held in Chicago on October 16, 2003.
The winning of an R&D 100 Awards provides a mark of excellence
known to industry, government, and academia as proof that the product
is one of the most innovative ideas of the year.
