Alcoa Texarkana Opens New Tube Mills; Customers, Community Leaders, Employees Participate in Dedication Ceremonies
TEXARKANA, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2003--Alcoa announced
today that leadership of Alcoa Mill Products Texarkana plant, along
with key customers, community leaders and employees will officially
open the two aluminum welded tube lines in commissioning ceremonies
today. The equipment, part of a purchase of assets Alcoa made earlier
from the former Scottsboro Aluminum rolling mill facility in Alabama,
is now installed and in production.
The new lines, when fully crewed to a three shift operation employ
27 people, according to Ann E. Whitty, recently named director of
manufacturing for Texarkana Operations. "We are excited about having
this new product line in Texarkana, and we are delighted with the new
customers that will be using our products. The addition of these lines
at our plant will provide Alcoa's customers a full complement of
welded tube products," Whitty said.
Customers and potential customers participating in the dedication
ceremony and displaying products include fabricators of tubular metal
parts and assemblies used primarily for lawn and garden and sports and
recreational equipment.
The welded tube lines transform coiled aluminum sheet into a tube
or other cylindrical shape, longitudinally welding the product while
maintaining extremely close gage tolerances. The two lines produce
products with diameter ranges of 1/2 inch to 2 inches. Various gauge,
lengths, alloy, temper, shape and finishes will be offered to
customers.
Alcoa Mill Products - Texarkana currently has over 350 employees
making coiled aluminum sheet products for customers in the commercial
transportation, automotive, building and construction, and
distributions markets.
