Alcoa Once Again Named to Dow Jones Sustainability Index

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 5, 2002--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) today announced that for the second consecutive year it has been named a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index based on the company's ability to balance environmental excellence, social responsibility and financial success.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) are the world's first global indexes tracking the performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The DJSI World family is limited to the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Index in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria.

"Alcoa is extremely proud to retain this noteworthy distinction. It is a deserving tribute to the sustainability efforts of all of our employees around the globe," said Alain Belda, Alcoa Chairman and CEO.

Alcoa was first named a component of the DJSI in 2001. It joins approximately 300 companies from 23 countries that lead their industry in sustainability. Last year Alcoa launched a series of ambitious environmental goals as part of its 2020 Global Environmental Strategy.

Alcoa is the world's leading producer of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina, and is active in all major aspects of the industry. Alcoa serves the aerospace, automotive, packaging, building and construction, commercial transportation and industrial markets, bringing design, engineering, production and other capabilities of Alcoa's businesses to customers. In addition to aluminum products and components, Alcoa also markets consumer brands including Reynolds Wrap(R) foils and plastic wraps, Alcoa(R) wheels, and Baco(R) household wraps. Among its other businesses are vinyl siding, closures, precision castings, and electrical distribution systems for cars and trucks. The company has 129,000 employees in 38 countries.
