Alcoa Foundation Recipient of Outstanding Global Leadership Award From United Way International

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 13, 2002--Alcoa Foundation was presented the Outstanding Global Leadership Award from the United Way International (UWI) during the UWI World Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Outstanding Global Leadership Award recognizes an organization's commitment, leadership, creativity and impact in communities around the world. Alcoa Foundation was recognized for its role in Jamaica, where Alcoa Jamalco has operations, in the following areas:

  • Commitment that is unique to local community needs including those of the physically or emotionally challenged: Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation mobilized support and funding for UWI from the bauxite industry.
  • Leadership that involved engaging Alcoa employees in local nonprofit organizations and loaning Alcoa executives to assist in establishing and maintaining United Way in the central region of Jamaica.
  • Creativity in helping UWI expand and change its services to meet community needs: Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa employees are involved in helping nonprofit organizations in Jamaica develop and sustain income-generating businesses.
  • Impact in stimulating others to help UWI's efforts in Jamaica: Alcoa Foundation acts as a convener of community resources and other donors to UWI's work.
