Alcoa Continues to Demonstrate Commitment to Significant Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Welcomed as Charter Partner in U.S. EPA Voluntary Climate Leaders Program
PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 2002--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) today
joined the United States Environment Protection Agency's (EPA)
voluntary Climate Leaders program as a charter partner. Participation
in the Climate Leaders program complements voluntary agreements Alcoa
already has in place with the governments of Quebec and Australia, and
reinforces the commitment Alcoa has made to achieving significant,
global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
"Leadership and learning go hand in hand in environmental
initiatives such as the EPA's Climate Leaders program," said Alcoa
Chairman and CEO Alain Belda. "Voluntary partnerships with industry,
government, and communities create useful open forums for building and
sharing knowledge. Alcoa views participation in these partnerships as
one of the key enablers for achieving the ambitious environmental
goals we've set for Alcoa over the next 20 years, and for the overall
achievement of globally sustainable reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions."
In 2000 Alcoa announced its 20-year strategic environmental plan
which included commitment to 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
from the 1990 base-line by 2010.
