Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation Sponsor First-Ever Comprehensive U.S. Exhibition of Russian Art
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 2005--Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation announced today their joint sponsorship of Russia!, the most comprehensive exhibition of Russian art ever assembled in the United States, at the world-renowned Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. As the Guggenheim's major fall 2005 exhibition, Russia! is scheduled to debut Sept. 16, 2005 and run through Jan. 12, 2006.
For almost the entire 20th century, the talented work of Russian artists was sealed off from the rest of the world, and this gateway to understanding the Russian culture was inaccessible to most. Spanning 900 years and including more than 300 objects, Russia! will bring together some of the greatest treasures of Russian art from the 12th century to the present, selected from the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Kremlin Museum, the State Hermitage Museum, and other public and private collections. A significant number of works have either rarely or never traveled abroad.
"We are pleased to support the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in presenting this exhibition, which enables Alcoa to serve as a catalyst in offering insight about the Russian culture through its art," said Alcoa Chairman and CEO Alain Belda. "As part of the landscape in both Russia and New York, Alcoa is delighted to help build a bridge of understanding between these two countries, as the arts often challenge us all to explore new and diverse perspectives."
Earlier this year, Alcoa acquired two fabricating facilities in Samara and Belaya Kalita, adding new rolling, extruding, forging and other capabilities to its global fabricating network. By combining this local presence with Alcoa's global resources, Alcoa provides customers with leading-edge technology, expertise and integrated solutions for a wide range of products.
Alcoa has been part of the Russian landscape since 1993 with the formation of Alcoa Russia, with an office in Moscow. In 1997, Alcoa CSI Vostok Ltd. opened a facility in Lyubachany to manufacture plastic closures for the packaging and consumer goods market. The business also provides technologically advanced equipment and technical support to the Russian bottling industry.
"Alcoa Foundation actively pursues opportunities to improve the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide. By sponsoring this exhibition of Russian art in New York City, we are offering the world the opportunity to learn about the remarkable and interconnected history of Russia through its art," said Kathleen W. Buechel, president and treasurer of Alcoa Foundation.
