Alcoa Facility in Alberta Recognized as a Safety Leader; Invited to Serve as an Alberta Health and Safety Mentor

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 2005--Alcoa (NYSE:AA) announced today that its Kawneer Company in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada has been recognized by the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Council as an industry leader in producing superior safety results and has been invited to serve as an Alberta Health and Safety Mentor.

The invitation comes shortly after the Kawneer facility was selected by Alberta Human Resources and Employment to become a Health and Safety Partner. The Health and Safety Partnership program enlists corporate leaders in the province that are proactive in creating a healthy and safe work culture.

"We are honored to be invited to serve as an Alberta Health and Safety Mentor," said Glen Morrison, President, Kawneer North America. "We have a long-standing commitment to health and safety, and we work each day with the goal of zero injuries and zero work-related illnesses. We look forward to extending the reach of our safety culture by reducing injuries and fatalities not just at our facilities, but at workplaces in our communities."

The Kawneer facility has been part of Alberta's Partnerships in Health and Safety program for the past four years and voluntarily submits to health and safety audits through the incentive-based program. The program is designed to encourage employers to develop effective health, safety and disability management systems to reduce losses associated with workplace injuries.

According to Alberta Human Resources and Employment, of the 110,000 employers in the province, only 72 have been recognized as Partners in Health and Safety. The Kawneer Lethbridge facility employs about 240 workers.

"Our team is proud of the recognition given to us by the government of Alberta. We have been working hard over the past few years to further develop our safety program, and we will continue to focus our efforts on making our plant an incident free workplace," said Plant Manager Rob MacDonald. "Safety involves everybody, every day. It's something that one person alone cannot accomplish, so we look forward to working together with other businesses to make Alberta the safest place to work."

Kawneer North America is based in Norcross, Georgia, USA and is the leading provider of architectural aluminum products and systems for the commercial construction industry. The business is part of Alcoa's global Building and Construction Systems (BCS) business unit headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
