Alcoa Curtails Production at ABI Facility During Strike

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 2004--Alcoa today said it would take the next step in its plan to operate the Becancour aluminum smelter in Quebec where the employees represented by the Syndicat des Employees de l'Aluminerie de Becancour have been on strike since July 7th. The company will cut production from two potlines to one over the next three days, reducing production at the facility by an additional 11,000 tonnes per month, to approximately 135,000 metric tonnes per year ("mtpy.")

ABI's overall capacity is 400,000 mtpy. It is one of 27 smelters within the Alcoa global smelting system, which has a worldwide capacity of approximately 4 million metric tons per year. Alcoa is working to minimize the impact that this reduced production will have on customers.
