PITTSBURGH--March 23, 1999--
Alcoa announced today that it will shut down its 30,000
metric-ton-per-year smelter in Suriname indefinitely. The smelter
shutdown has been influenced by the high relative cost of the smelter
and low rainfall affecting power generation. Shutdown will commence
immediately and be completed over the next few weeks.
