Earnest J. Edwards to Retire as Alcoa Senior V.P. and Controller
PITTSBURGH--July 29, 1999--
Earnest J. Edwards, senior vice president and controller, has elected to
retire at the end of 1999 after 34 years of service with Alcoa. Mr.
Edwards, born in Pamplin, Virginia, began his career with Alcoa as a
controllership trainee at Cleveland, Ohio Works after serving four years
as an officer in the United States Air Force.
He is an accounting graduate of Virginia State University and received
his MBA from Duquesne University.
He has held various accounting and finance positions in Cleveland, Los
Angeles and Pittsburgh. In 1977, he was named controller of the Forging
Division in Cleveland, returning to Pittsburgh in 1979 as controller of
the Flat Rolled Products Division. Two years later, he was named general
manager of Alcoa Management Information Systems, the company's
information technology group. Mr. Edwards was elected corporate
controller in 1982, vice president in 1984 and senior vice president in
1997. Among his many contributions was the reengineering and
restructuring of the controllership functions throughout Alcoa. This led
to a significantly more efficient and effective Finance organization and
enabling Alcoa to become one of the first of the Dow 30 to report
quarterly earnings.
Mr. Edwards serves on the Board of Trustees of LaRoche College and is a
director of the Alcoa Foundation. He is a member of the Financial
Executives Institute (FEI) and a former chairman of its Committee on
Corporate Reporting. He is a member of the Institute of Management
Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants and the
Executive Leadership Council.
