Alcoa Howmet Castings Recognized By CT Dept. of Environmental Protection with GreenCircle Award

WINSTED, Conn., September 19, 2002 - Alcoa Howmet Castings today announced that it has received a 2002 GreenCircle Award by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. The award is in recognition of the company's pollution prevention activity at its Howmet Machining facility in Winsted, Connecticut. A ceremony honoring GreenCircle recipients took place in Hartford, Connecticut earlier today.

According to Kevin Maddy, general manager for Howmet Machining, "The GreenCircle Award reflects our commitment to the environment as well as the health and safety of our community. It is part of our goal to become the best company in the world."

Howmet Machining has undertaken an aggressive program to achieve its pollution prevention goals. Results of that program include the reduction of wastewater from the discharge process from 14,000 gallons per day (gpd) to approximately 1,200 gpd, the implementation of the Alcoa Eight Step Minimization Process at the plant, and switching to non-hazardous washing solvents, coolants, and thermometers.
