Dr. Ray Kilmer was named Alcoa Chief Technology Officer in April 2011 and elected an executive vice president of the company a month later.  In addition to serving as the chief technology officer of the company, he will lead the Alcoa Technical Center (ATC), the world’s largest light metals facility based in New Kensington, Pa.  He has a major role in expanding the ties between ATC and the Alcoa businesses to accelerate the commercialization of technology.  Ray is also a member of the Alcoa Executive Council, the senior leadership group that sets strategic priorities for the corporation.  Most recently, Ray was Vice President Technology Development and Deployment based at ATC where he had responsibility for all Product and Process Development Programs at ATC. 
 
Ray joined Alcoa in 1998 as the Manager of the Brazing Sheet Development Factory and Director of Marketing, Brazing Sheet and Heat Exchanger Extrusions and was located at the company’s Lancaster, Pa., facility.  He continued in several commercial roles, rising to Global Commercial Director of the Automotive Flat Rolled Business, based in Detroit.  Later, as Vice President of Global Rolled Products Engineering and Technology Group, his responsibilities included leadership of the Knoxville (Tenn.) Engineering Group, Molten Metal Technology Group, Product Development Groups for North American Rolled Products and Rigid Packaging, including the Packaging Technology and Coatings Technology Groups.  He was Chairman of the Technology Management Review Board for Global Rolled Products and he had overarching responsibility for the rolling mill portion of the Ma’aden-Alcoa Project, which broke ground in April 2011. 
 
Earlier in his career, Ray worked for General Motors (1993-1998) as plant metallurgist and assistant superintendent of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. 
 
Ray received a bachelor’s of science degree in metallurgical engineering in 1987 from Purdue University and obtained an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia, in 1989 and 1993, respectively.  He is the recipient of the University of Virginia Sigma Xi Outstanding Ph.D. Award.  He holds nearly 25 U.S. and international patents.
