Though integrally stiffened panel (ISP) applications have existed in the aerospace, marine, automotive, and rail industries since the 1950s, there has been a renewed focus on the use of extruded ISPs for the wings and wing box of large commercial aircraft. With extruded ISPs, both the skin and the stiffeners are one continuous part made from the same piece of raw stock. As such, they are an effective method of producing high-strength, lightweight structures and are well suited for the highly loaded, long panels of a commercial aircraft wing.
