A coated substrate, such as thick, coated metal sheet is made using a system where a moving metal sheet substrate, preferably aluminum over 0.1 mm thick contacts an applicator roll which has a non-deformable, micro-porous flat ceramic surface which is coated with a coating liquid which is picked up, by a metering roll and applied to the applicator roll by contact with the coated metering roll, and where a backup roll usually helps support the moving substrate.
