The invention described herein relates to the reduction of aluminium from its oxide by dissolving such oxide in a bath containing a fused fluoride salt of aluminium and then reducing the aluminium by passing an electric current through the bath; and in general terms the invetntion consists in the electrolysis of a solution of alumina in a fused fluoride salt of aluminium, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
