Alcoa, Tennessee 2008

To provide shade for schoolchildren using the playgrounds at Foothills Elementary School, 20 employees from the nearby Alcoa Tennessee Operations and their family members planted five Yoshino cherry trees donated by Alcoa employee Myra Hair and her husband Shane.

A sign attached to each of the trees is engraved with the planting date (February 16) and one of the five grades at the school. Each of the trees will be cared for by the respective grade as part of their science and discovery projects and environmental curriculum.

The Alcoa employees also built permanent shade shelters over four benches used by teachers watching children during recess. The volunteer effort was part of Alcoa's ACTION program, resulting in a US$3,000 grant to the school.
