Setting Benchmarks in Mine Reclamation

ISO 14001. Behind this certification attached to Alcoa's Poços de Caldas mine in Brazil are close to 25 years of groundbreaking environmental work that has set the standard for environmental practices and educational activities throughout the country.
An understanding of the importance of mine reclamation led to active collaboration between Alcoa and Brazilian universities, including Viçosa and Lavras Federal Universities, in the pursuit of best-practice mine rehabilitation. For several decades now, the program has included students and professors involved in research, post-graduate work, and visits to Alcoa mine sites. The partnership also led to the establishment of the 17-hectare (42-acre) Don Williams Environmental Education and Research Center, located on a mining property and named after the Poços de Caldas mine manager who inspired and led the company into the partnership. To date, more than 50,000 local schoolchildren have attended this center since it opened in 1993.
In 1998, the Alcoa bauxite mine at Poços de Caldas was the first Alcoa operation in the Western Hemisphere to achieve ISO 14001 certification. Below is a representative listing of Alcoa locations that received ISO 14001 certification in 2001.
Hannover (Germany) Ludwigshafen (Germany) Feltre (Italy) Acuna (Mexico) Juarez (Mexico) Torreon (Mexico) Lista (Norway) Noblejas (Spain) Perfialsa (Spain) Suralco (Suriname) Swansea (United Kingdom)
