Germany, Hungary - 2001
Replacing Equipment, Reducing Emissions

Updating and upgrading plants and equipment is a significant factor in improving environment, health, and safety performance. In 2001, Alcoa spent $184 million undertaking such upgrades. Here are some examples of that work.

At Alcoa-Köfém in Hungary, smaller, energy-efficient boilers that feature low NOx gas burners are replacing an old central boiler house. In 2001, the new boilers consumed 43.4% less natural gas and reduced emissions by an equal amount. At the same facility, five melting/casting furnaces are now using regenerative burners that reduce both natural gas consumption and emissions by 25%.

At the Ludwigshafen facility in Germany, two rotary kilns needed to be upgraded to meet the latest technology standards. By replacing the equipment's oil firing with natural gas, the plant virtually eliminated the kilns' sulfur emissions and substantially improved safety. The replacements also lowered energy costs and improved product consistency and process control.
