Alcoa thanks local heroes

Alcoa would like to praise the courageous spirit of our employee volunteers, fire fighters, local residents and community organisations whose efforts have been so critical in responding to the tragic impact of the south west bushfires.

These fires have devastated communities surrounding our operations, with a number of our employees among those tragically displaced. Community Relations Manager Kathryn Sydney-Smith said the company was extremely proud that in the midst of disaster the company’s workforce had united with local residents and community organisations to provide support and assistance to those in need. “A number of our employees have joined the heroic efforts of local bush fire brigades in fighting the fire at the front lines, said Ms Sydney-Smith. “Further employee volunteers have joined with the Department of Environment and Conservation to build containment lines, while our water trucks have been used to refill fire trucks. “Our broader workforce has also responded to the tragedy, offering to personally contribute funds, food, clothing and other much-needed items to those impacted.” Ms Sydney Smith said Alcoa wanted to give further thanks to those local companies and community organisations who had contributed. “Over the past 24 hours, the canteens at our Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries have provided more than 1000 hot meals to emergency services personnel and families in need, with 100 of these meals generously donated by Spotless Catering.” “Mention needs to also be made of Fairbridge Village in Pinjarra who has been sheltering evacuees, as well as the Salvation Army, Dwellingup Country Women’s Association, Anglicare WA, Shire of Murray, and the Department of Community Development who have come to the aid of those impacted.” Ms Sydney Smith said that the company was pleased to be able to support the remarkable community effort with financial assistance to the value of $100,000 from the Alcoa Foundation. The funding will be disseminated via the Salvation Army to those in need. The Alcoa Foundation is a global resource that actively invests in the quality of life in Alcoa communities worldwide. With more than $410 million invested since its inception in 1952, Alcoa Foundation has positioned itself as a source of positive community change and enhancement.
