Alcoa Foundation Launches Recycling Challenge to Consumers on America Recycles Day 2010

‘Download to Donate’ initiative gives $1 for every download of AluminateTM recycling app to Keep America Beautiful

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Alcoa Foundation announced today it has joined forces with Keep America Beautiful as a key partner of America Recycles Day, Nov. 15, 2010.

In announcing the partnership, Alcoa Foundation also launched a unique ‘Download to Donate’ initiative, donating one dollar to Keep America Beautiful (KAB) for every FREE AluminateTM recycling app download, between America Recycles Day and Jan. 23, 2011, up to $50,000. The funding will further strengthen KAB’s environmental education programs and recycling infrastructure.

The partnership reinforces Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation’s long-standing commitment to increasing recycling across communities. Since 2008, Alcoa has distributed more than 75,000 recycling bins, launched the Make an Impact program to help families live more sustainably, developed the FREE AluminateTM recycling app, and in the last five years, invested nearly $3.5 million in community-based recycling programs.

“Recycling is a simple action to take, but it has a huge impact on our collective energy use. Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for nearly two hours,” said Alcoa Foundation President Paula Davis.

“America Recycles Day is a great opportunity for us to generate awareness about recycling and, we hope, encourage more people to take that one extra step.”
