Sustainable Environment:

Mobilizing Individual Action

Growing concern around the environmental impacts of climate change and rising energy costs have prompted many of our employees and neighbors to question what they can do to take action. In response, Alcoa Foundation has invested more than $2 million to raise awareness and mobilize action on climate change in Alcoa communities.

Make an Impact

Helping families reduce their carbon footprint - and save money!

Make an Impact is helping thousands of Alcoa families and neighbors reduce their carbon footprint - saving the planet and saving money at the same time! The flagship Alcoa Foundation program was developed in 2006 through a partnership with Greening Australia, and launched across the US in 2008 through a partnership with the Pew Centre on Global Climate Change. Through a leading interactive website and interactive workshops across Alcoa communities, the Make an Impact program helps Alcoa families and neighbors to calculate their carbon footprint and take steps to reduce it. Over 20% of Alcoa's Australian workforce have signed on to 'make an impact' and the program is on track to reach 40% of Alcoa's US workforce by mid-2011. To date the program has helped families identify over 2,000,000lbs of CO2 savings, equivalent to $900,000 in energy savings!

Earthwatch

Through Alcoa's eight-year partnership with Earthwatch, employees and local leaders from Alcoa communities learn how their individual actions impact local surrounding environments, while also contributing to critical environmental research projects. Since 2003, 94 Alcoa employees have undertaken Earthwatch Fellowships, contributing over 6800 research hours to solving some of the biggest sustainability challenges of our time. In 2010, Alcoa Foundation has expanded the Fellowship Program to provide 12 representatives from Alcoa communities worldwide the opportunity to volunteer alongside employees on expeditions. In addition to contributing to the knowledge needed to build a sustainable future, this hands-on support for scientific fieldwork provides participants a rich understanding of global environmental challenges and how individual daily behaviors, both at work and at home, can contribute to a more sustainable future. Alcoa Earthwatch expeditions are linked to global issues that are of that are of shared importance to our company and the communities where our operations are centered: climate change, global water supply, and sustainability. All participants complete an environmental curriculum as part of their expedition experience, providing them a learning framework to connect that research to the issues they face in their communities and delivering meaningful impact on the environmental and economic health of local communities. GLOBE

Mobilizing Young People on Environmental Issues

Alcoa Foundation is partnering GLOBE Europe and Eurasia to provide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. Alcoa Foundation funding helped establish the European GLOBE Youth Summit in 2011 where students from all over Europe will get together to present their GLOBE research to each other and to the world.  This will be the beginning of the European part of a Worldwide Student Research Campaign on Climate that aims to involve 1,000,000 students worldwide.   GLOBE students in 110 countries around the globe have contributed more than 19 million measurements to the GLOBE database for use in their inquiry-based science projects. More
