Project Title: Solid Waste Resource Recycling from New Rural Construction in China
Publications and Presentations: Forthcoming
Project Description With the development of China’s rural economy, significant amounts of solid waste and biomass, such as crop residue and livestock waste, are produced from agricultural activities. This waste, combined with municipal solid waste, is a growing environmental issue for rural residents and has hindered sustainable development.
“While considered a source of pollution, much of the rural solid waste can be converted into valuable resources, such as energy and fertilizer,” said Dr. Xiaojie Sun, an Alcoa Foundation fellow who is examining how much waste can be reused as well as the technological and legal support available.
Dr. Sun’s research will focus on the following four areas:- Sorting of rural solid waste: Using three kinds of hand screens with varying apertures, Sun will sort rural waste into different sizes and types. This will help identify the percentage of waste that could be composted or reutilized, as well waste considered poisonous or harmful.
- Composting of solid waste: This research will look at composting crop waste, livestock waste, and easily biodegradable organics under different conditions. Sun will also exam how to mitigate, transform, or stabilize heavy metal found in rural waste.
- Technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in rural landfill waste: Sun will examine the various technologies available to reduce naturally forming greenhouse gases, such as methane, that occur in landfills and harness the potential energy of these gases.
- Construction planning for new countryside in China: This preliminary study will provide the policy and legal support for rural waste recycling and reuse.
“I hope that through my research, low-cost and efficient technologies for the recycling and reuse of solid waste can be developed, providing a viable solution for alleviating pollution and producing energy,” said Dr. Sun.
Biographical Information Dr. Xiaojie Sun majored in mold design and manufacturing at the Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering. While serving as a technician at Qindao Northern Steel & Pipes Company, he became interested in environmental protection and later earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Qindao Technological University.
Between March 2004 and November 2007, he studied at Tongji University, earning a Ph.D. in environmental engineering while specializing in solid waste treatment and resource reuse. He also participated in various research projects, including National Nature Science Foundation projects, China’s 863 Program, and the Shanghai 2010 World Exhibition Demonstration Project.
