Board of Directors Visits
As part of its efforts to gain first-hand knowledge of Alcoa activities around the world, our board of directors often visits locations or regions to meet with employees and key stakeholders. Two such visits occurred in 2006.
In June, three members of the Public Issues Committee met with community leaders in Juruti, Brazil, to discuss environmental and social concerns with our new bauxite mine development in the region. They also met with governmental and community leaders in nearby Belem. In both instances, the board met directly with people who supported and opposed our project and heard first-hand the opportunities and challenges of the mine development.
In September, the board visited the Alcoa Fjardaal site in Iceland to see the final construction on this US$1.2 billion smelting complex and celebrate the international construction team's third one million hours without a lost-time injury. Board members also continued on to an event in Berlin to meet with European customers.
