Australia - 2006
Volunteers Go Back to School
Retired citizens in Australia are going back to school through an Alcoa-supported program called Timehelp that matches retirees with local schools and community projects.
Timehelp, which was started in Victoria with support from Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa retirees, currently has 35 volunteers working with 12 local schools. Volunteer Helen Grainger, for example, is a regular visitor to Yennora Public School, where many of the students are recent migrants without grandparents in Australia and enjoy the chance to spend time with older people.
In an independent evaluation of the program in 2006, teachers reported that students' social skills and learning outcomes had improved through their interaction with the Timehelp volunteers. They also felt the program was building stronger relationships between schools and their communities.
The program was extended to Western Sydney in 2006 through a partnership between Alcoa Australia Rolled Products, Alcoa Foundation, Holroyd City Council, and the Charities Aid Foundation.
