Serving as an EHS Benchmark

While systems and processes are in place to share environment, health, and safety (EHS) information and best practices among its locations, Alcoa also conducts benchmarking events with other companies interested in learning more about Alcoa's EHS approach.
In late 2005, Alcoa Fastening Systems (AFS) hosted such an event with Lockheed Martin's EHS corporate directors, plant EHS managers, and their consultants at the AFS operation in Carson, California.

Lockheed Martin, a leader in the aerospace and defense industry and an AFS strategic partner, selected AFS as a key company with which to benchmark EHS management systems and practices. Lockheed Martin specifically focused on learning how Alcoa handles fatality prevention and incident investigation, training, contractor safety, employee participation, culture change, and the Alcoa Self Assessment Tool (ASAT). The observations made by Lockheed Martin at the AFS facility will be combined and compared with observations made in a similar benchmarking event with the Toyota Motor Company.

"The insights we gained from the AFS EHS team during the presentations were most helpful in understanding what makes this facility and Alcoa a leader in health and safety management," said Maribeth Malloy, director of Corporate Governance, Corporate Energy, Environment, Health and Safety for Lockheed Martin.

Carson's EHS management systems have been recommended for third-party ISO14001 and ISO18001 certification by the BSI Group, an international standards registrar. It is one of Alcoa's first locations to achieve this recognition.
