Guinea - 2005
Keeping Schoolchildren Safe and Healthy in Guinea

The cleaning of two primary schools in Guinea's Boke prefecture during Alcoa's 2005 Week of Service resulted in more than just a clean and healthy learning environment. The project also showed students the value placed on their health and safety and how small actions can make a huge difference in their lives.

The school cleaning campaign was organized by School to School International, which administers the Alcoa School Health and Education (ASHE) Project funded by Alcoa Foundation. ASHE's goal is to increase student success in elementary school by improving their health and nutritional status with the assistance of their teachers, their parents, and the community.

During the cleaning event, an Alcoa employee and five contractors helped community members clean the Kawass and Kamakoulou primary schools inside and out and top to bottom, eliminating potential habitats for spiders, snakes, and malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

"Alcoa's participation was welcomed by the community," said Fode Berete, director of mines and geology for Lower Guinea and the Boke prefecture representative at the event. "It is the first time that a company thought about participating in such an activity, and this participation made the community realize how important it is to have the children's schools clean and healthy. As a result, these communities and schools have decided to organize themselves to continue performing school cleaning activities once a week."

He adds, "Both the schoolchildren and their teachers realized their schools looked different, and they thought it would be good to keep up that positive image. The children can now breath clean air, they have less mosquito bites, and they can play safely in the backyard. If their health is protected, they will have fewer absences due to illness and more time for school. Their grades will improve, and they can move forward."
