Brazil - 2005
Bringing EHS, Sustainability Awareness to the Community

As part of its commitment to be the best company in the community, Alcoa’s AFL do Brasil location in Itajubá has implemented an extensive community awareness program on topics related to environment, health, and safety (EHS) and sustainability.

The community outreach activities reach thousands of people every year, and examples include the following:
  • Employees have planted almost 20,000 trees as part of Alcoa’s Ten Million Trees program.  The location’s goal is to have 54,000 trees planted by 2020, including native trees planted in partnership with local non-governmental organizations and government agencies for preservation and erosion-control purposes.
  • Employees have served as guides during five ecological horseback rides, where family members ride and plant trees together. Since 1997, the location has also sponsored ecological canoe trips, which focus on increasing awareness of problems related to improper waste management, poor use of natural resources, and deforestation along the banks of the Sapucaí River.
  • Since 1998, AFL do Brasil has been holding a range of lectures on safety and the environment for school students and community members.  Topics have included AIDS prevention, cancer caretaker training, sustainability, EHS management systems, and parasitosis. Attendance has grown from 30 in the first year to more than 4,000 in the first half of 2005.
  • Other major initiatives include protecting and preserving more than 1,074 hectares (2,654 acres) of the Serra dos Toledos Biological Reserve; rehabilitating Anhumas Park so it could be incorporated into the community’s recreational facilities; installing septic tanks in the Peroba neighborhood, and remodeling the State Forestry Institute building.

In recognition of its work, AFL do Brasil received the title “Citizen of the Waters” from the Friends of the Sapucaí River and was honored by the Friends of the Environment 2005.  The location also received a 2005 Alcoa EHS Achievement Award.
