Brazil Growth Initiatives
Born in May of 1965, Otavio obtained his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil in 1987. In July 1988, he joined Alcoa as a Trainee Engineer at the Itapissuma plant and concluded his MBA at Fundação Getúlio Vargas in 1999.
In January 2015, as Alcoa launched the new Mining business, Otavio was named VP of Commercial & Business Development with global responsibilities to develop the market, by profitably growing third party bauxite sales and leading the commercial functions for this over $1 billion business. The Alcoa Mining business will reach over 6.7 million tons of third party sales in 2016, representing more than 200% growth compared to 2015.
In addition to his Commercial & BD responsibilities, Otavio represents Alcoa and AWA as a member of the Board of Directors of MRN (the 3rd largest bauxite mine in the world) since 2012. He is a Board member of Instituto Alcoa and Alcoa Previ (Alcoa’s pension plan for Brazilian employees) and has represented Alcoa in the Board of ABAL (Brazilian Aluminum Association) and in the Board of the Green Building Council Brazil. He also served as a member of the first group of Alcoa Integrity Champions from 2013 thru 2015.
Prior to this current position, during six years, he was responsible for the commercial activities of Alcoa’s Primary Products in Latin America and Caribbean, when he played a key role to maximize results during a very significant transformation of the business. He was also accountable for the Alcoa growth initiatives and strategies in Brazil and led a RD&I team that worked in close connection with all BU’s to introduce new products, develop innovation in materials and application of industrial residues.
From 2005 thru 2008, Otavio was the head of the Alcoa Foil business in China living in Shanghai. In his capacity he had full P&L responsibilities for the $200M in revenues. He led the business thru an important change in product mix. In 2004 and 2005, he served as Director, Latin America Extrusions, a business with revenues above $250M. Also with full P&L responsibility, he implemented a major turnaround that brought the business back to profitability.
Prior to that, he was the General Manager of the Alcoa’s Latin America Flexible Packaging business for two years and held various positions in the Brazilian Flat Rolled Products, including Foil Products Manager, Human Resources, Quality and EHS Manager and Sales.
In 1993, Otavio was assigned for an 18 months project at the Alcoa Technical Center where he was the liaison of Alcoa Aluminio.
His wife, Gianna, has a PhD in Genetics and is a Professor at Sao Paulo Federal University. They have two sons: Pedro, born in 1986 and currently living in NYC area, and Leonardo, born in 1988, who lives in Sao Paulo.
