AFS Achieves Exporter of the Year Award

Telford, UK -- July 27, 2007 -- A UK manufacturer has won the exporter of the year at a regional business awards ceremony.
Alcoa Fastening Systems Ltd (AFS), who engineer high-quality, high-performance fastening systems serving a variety of applications predominantly in the truck, trailer, commercial vehicle body builder, auto and railcar markets, achieved the accolade at a recent business awards evening hosted by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and the Shropshire Star newspaper.

The seventh annual ceremony held at Telford International Centre was attended by 600 people representing a cross section of businesses from the county of Shropshire. From 160 companies who entered the competition AFS were one of three finalists in both the export and business of the year categories respectively. Narrowly missing out on business of the year, the Export Award, sponsored by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), was won based their outstanding performance during 2006. Having recorded the most successful year since the company was established as Huck International in 1985, AFS were allocated the highest marks from the judges in the following criteria: export marketing strategy and market communications, tailoring of goods to meet the needs of the export market, the ability to overcome cultural and language barriers and evidence of the strategy in place for future export growth.
Commenting on the achievement, operations director Marcus Lokier said: "We are delighted with this award which represents how AFS has evolved from when we were first established. In 1986 export sales accounted for only 25% of our turnover whereas now due to the hard work of our sales team and the company’s approach to realising new markets throughout Europe, India and South East Asia the figure is closer to 80%. Our continued success and the award we have received reflects this turnaround as well the contribution AFS makes to Shropshire’s economy by providing long term, quality employment for local people."
