July 27, 2005 -- Alcoa Fastening Systems sponsored the winning solar vehicle in the North American Solar Challenge, an educational competition to design, build and race cars from the United States to Canada using only the sun’s energy.

AFS sponsored Momentum, the solar car built by University of Michigan students in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. More than 130 different varieties of AFS fasteners were used on the car and dozens of Alcoans around the world provided their expertise to help the UM students manufacture a car with an exciting, lightweight and aerodynamic design. Momentum raced from Austin, Texas to Calgary, Alberta in 53 hours, 59 minutes and 43 seconds. The North American Solar Challenge is the longest solar car race in the world, at 2,500 miles. The AFS-backed team will now compete in the World Solar Challenge in Australia in September.
