Alcoa Fastening Systems of Brazil Hosts Technical Symposium

Alcoa Fastening Systems hosted a technical symposium on mechanical joint design and airframe assembly at Embraer Empresa Brasileira Aeronautica S.A.

A high level technical team traveled to Sao Jose dos Campos outside Sao Paulo to host the symposium on May 12 and 13 at the Novotel Hotel. Embraer requested the symposium, designed to facilitate a close technical collaboration between Alcoa Fastening Systems, and Embraer. Participants included over 80 engineers from Embraer’s material and process group, structural design group as well as representatives from procurement, manufacturing and tooling.
 
The Alcoa team included Luke Haylock, Director of New Product Development; Joe Galloway, Director of Sales; Mike March, Carson Engineering Manager; Gerhart Hufnagl, Sr. Principal Engineer; Bob Palmiteer, Account Manager and Harry Zonker, Sr. Engineer from the Alcoa Technical Center in Pittsburgh PA. The symposium was organized Jose Dias Pereira and Renato Martins Pereira of Airtraders Consulting and coordinated by Max Muller de o. Santos and Marcio Sanglard Torres of Embraer
 
Presentations covered principles of joint design; Improving the performance of Mechanically Fastened Joint Trough the use of new resistant fatigue aluminum alloys; Fastener flushness and hole preparation; Fastener material and coating selection; The XPL extended performance Lockbolt; New generation blind fastener and installation automation; Low cost manufacturing and structure design trade studies as well as a preview of various new products under development.
