General Dynamics is using Alcoa's material, design and manufacturing expertise to help develop one of two competing prototypes of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), a new class of fast, stealthy seagoing surface craft capable of operating in near-shore (littoral) waters.
To attain its intended performance targets, the Littoral Combat Ship will need advanced hull design, materials and structural design.
Through intense collaboration between the Navy and industry, Alcoa designers will be integrated into LCS design teams to:
- Develop lightweight cost-efficient designs
- Solve specific needs for aluminum and titanium materials:
- Aluminum alloy data and design base
- Optimization of existing aluminum alloys
- Advanced welding and inspection processes
- Surface modification techniques
- Aluminum corrosion properties, detection and prevention
- New weldable aluminum alloys
- Manufacturing technologies for titanium
