When a Rolls-Royce powered Airbus A340 achieved the longest-ever non-stop commercial flight with Singapore Airlines, a lot more besides two hours of flight time was saved. The amount of fuel that was used and emissions that were released also decreased. And Alcoa Howmet helped that happen.
The Airbus A340 is powered by four Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines that are manufactured with Alcoa Howmet parts, including blades, vanes and seal segments. By using principles in the Alcoa Business System philosophy, Alcoa Howmet helped Rolls-Royce generate a savings for its customer, airline passengers, and the environment. Continuous improvement and a streamlined process approach enable Alcoa Howmet to deliver the highest value at the lowest possible cost for customers.
Shortly after this commercial flight milestone was achieved, Rolls-Royce - which operates in the four global markets of civil aerospace, defense aerospace, marine and energy - signed a long-term agreement with Alcoa Howmet to supply investment castings for a range of civil and defense aerospace products.
The long-term agreement between the two partners spans more than 80 components across Rolls-Royce's current portfolio of investment cast turbine products for the Rolls-Royce Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800, EJ200, RB211, T56, AE3007, 501 & 250 series of engines. Alcoa Howmet has agreed to supply parts for the Trent 900 and Trent 1000 as well.
