The Alcoa Environmental Protection Training Centre, jointly built by Alcoa Foundation and CFEJ, will serve as a training and communication platform for China’s environmental journalists and environment advocates, in an effort to improve their professional quality and raise public’s awareness of environmental protection.
“As the world’s leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminum, we understand our social responsibility to minimize our own environmental impact and to help improve the quality of life of the communities where we operate,” said Lloyd Jones, “We believe the initiative with CFEJ and the Chinese government will create broader public support for a balance of industrial development and environmental protection.”
Vice president Wu Xiaoqing said, as the pioneer and communicator, media and environmental journalists should shoulder the responsibility of promoting environmental protection laws and regulations and raising social awareness of environmental protection. Journalists should play a positive role in delivering news on environmental protection, reporting social conditions and public opinion and helping enhance the efficiency of environmental protection work in China. Alcoa Environmental Protection Base provides an effective communication platform for China’s environmental journalists and will play an important role in the cause of environmental protection in China. Vice Minister Wu thanked Alcoa Foundation and Alcoa for their efforts in promoting environmental protection communications in China.
Alcoa operates in 42 countries and has always had a strong commitment to communities. In 2005, Alcoa provided RMB 2.6 million in grants to Chinese organizations, and employees volunteered more than 900 hours in their communities. In March, 2006, Alcoa released its first China Sustainability Report, which provides detailed insight into the environmental, social and economic achievements and challenges of Alcoa in this Asian region. Lloyd Jones said, “in the next five years, Alcoa will significantly expand its integrated aluminum business in China, and hopes to continue to work with government and other businesses on a broad sustainability agenda.”
