Alcoa China Launched the 2008 Edition of its Report on Sustainability

(September 17, 2009, Beijing)Alcoa China announced today the release of its 2008 Sustainability Report, an annual account of its performance with respect to the environment, social commitment and economic development for the fourth consecutive year since 2005. Sustainability performance is a long – term investment, and we will work to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment; attract, develop, and retain the best people; strengthen ties with our community stakeholders; and grow profitably and safely,” said Jinya Chen, Alcoa Asia Pacific President. “In response to the economic downturn, we took swift measures to ensure our liquidity and financial stability and continued to pursue our growth strategy in China.” Alcoa China is proud to present the following key achievements in 2008:
- Investment and efforts in clean manufacturing resulted in effective energy saving and emission reduction.
- We contributed to China’s commitment to a “green” Olympics by providing lightweight aluminum for transportation systems that were used during the games. Our aluminum composite material was also included on several new venues constructed especially for the event.
- No employee or contractor fatalities occurred in 2008. Alcoa Bohai expansion project achieved more than 4 million hours without experiencing a recordable incident.
- We initiated a lot of programs to create a fair, safe, healthy and positive working environment for our employees.
- Alcoa Foundation awarded more than US$1million in grants for 16 projects in China that focus on environmental protection, conservation, disaster relief, education, etc.
- Our expansion project at Alcoa Bohai initiated trial production in January 2009 and will in completion in September 2009, which will enable China to produce the highest quality aluminum sheet, such as printing industry-use digital plate stocks, hard alloy transportation sheet, high surface-quality sheet for the electronics industry, and can body stock.
Inspired by the numerous honors Alcoa earned in 2008, including again being named one of the world’s most sustainable corporations at the World Economic Forum and included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the eighth year in a row, Alcoa Bohai, Kunshan, Shanghai and Hong Kong received external recognition in 2008 for their practices and achievements in environment, health, and safety; employment relations; and business development.
