Montréal, September 22 – In the framework of the Alcoa Worldwide Month of Service, roughly 200 employees from the various Alcoa Canada facilities decided to join forces and to serve their community as volunteers by actively participating in the improvement of the installations of different non-profit organizations.
Over the weekend of September 19 to 21, the Alcoa employees and their families spent a total of 814 hours building, constructing, renovating, improving, and restoring the installations of non-profit community organizations. Each year, this event, conducted simultaneously by the Alcoa team, brings together employees from the Baie-Comeau, Deschambault and Bécancour aluminium smelters, along with their colleagues from the Montréal headquarters, the Moulages Aéronautiques Alcoa plant in Laval, and the Kawneer facility in Pointe-Claire.
While in Montréal, Alcoa employees volunteered to lend a helping hand to the Québec Society for Disabled Children, our people in Bécancour and Trois-Rivières spent the weekend moving the Maison des Familles Chemin du Roi into the organization’s new premises that were freshly painted by the participants. The impact of the Alcoa team was even felt in the County of Portneuf, where employees from the Deschambault plant gathered to spruce up the Arc-en-ciel, an organization working in the area of mental health services. Lastly, in Baie-Comeau, volunteers from the aluminum smelter renovated the Pointe-Lebel community hall. This is how Alcoa builds with its people in Québec!
Alcoa in its communities – people making a difference In addition to this important activity held during the Alcoa Month of Service, it must be underlined that roughly 20 other activities are planned for the month of October in ten Canadian communities where Alcoa is present. In 2007, during the second edition of the Alcoa Worldwide Month of Service, 47,000 people, including 15,800 employees, participated in 780 events in no less than 200 communities of 36 countries.
“More than a value, community service is a way of life for people at Alcoa. The Month of Service is one more opportunity to put forward this way of life of our people, and to create the momentum needed to prompt everyone to participate simultaneously in an activity serving the enhancement of the quality of life in our community,†explains Jean-Pierre Gilardeau, President of Alcoa Canada. “We work and we live in a community. Isn’t it only natural then to want to enhance the quality of life in our immediate environment?†he adds.
