In the framework of the city’s 15th anniversary, Alcoa’s aluminum smelter in Deschambault and the Alcoa Foundation have announced an investment of $150,000 in the construction of a bridge over the Lachevrotière river, north of route 138 (Chemin du Roy). The bridge, swept away by the floods that followed the torrential rains of September 26 and October 15 and 16, 2005, is considered as a major utility in the life of the people of Deschambault-Grondines, and its reconstruction can only be viewed as good news for the community.

“For the past 15 years, we have actively participated in the life of the Portneuf community. We know that this bridge is essential to the quality of life of the people in this area. We are proud to contribute to reestablishing security and to easing circulation in the region, and to restore access to important heritage establishments,” underlined Mr. Jacques Alain, Vice-president and CEO of the Alcoa smelter in Deschambault, during the 15th anniversary celebrations.
The Moulin de Lachevrotière, a pillar of the regional heritage, is located in the vicinity of the bridge and was almost isolated since the river overflowed. Its surroundings include a forge, the École d’ébénisterie and the archives centre, institutions that have been recognized by different levels of government and that remain active components of the cultural and educational life of the community.
Partially made of aluminum, the bridge will be perfectly integrated into the landscape. The reconstruction of the bridge on the Lachevrotière river, expected to be reopened in the summer of 2008, requires roughly $300,000. The Alcoa Foundation and the Deschambault smelter are jointly contributing half of the investment, thereby acknowledging the community’s contribution to the international development of Alcoa.
